One of the first decisions when planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park is choosing the right airport. Because the park is so large and surrounded by small mountain towns, the airport you fly into can significantly affect your travel time, rental car options, and overall convenience.
During our first trip to Yellowstone, we flew into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) and drove to West Yellowstone, one of the most popular gateway towns to the park. This route is often recommended for first-time visitors because it provides the most flight options and reliable access to rental cars.
In this guide, we’ll compare the two most common airport options for travelers entering Yellowstone through the West Entrance: Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) and Yellowstone Airport (WYS). However, because Yellowstone Airport is small and seasonal, flight availability can be limited and ticket prices may be higher during peak summer travel months.
Driving from Yellowstone Airport to the Park
One of the biggest advantages of flying into WYS is the extremely short distance to Yellowstone National Park.
The airport sits just outside the town of West Yellowstone, which is one of the park’s most popular gateway towns. From the airport, it is only about:
